Quantum of Solace Movie Review

QUANTUM OF SOLACE: REVENGE IS SWEET

In Quantum of Solace,Bond is back and he is out for blood.  It has action, action, and some more action.  Director Marc Forster (Stranger than Fiction) has done a fine job transitioning from blockbuster love story Casino Royale to a tale of vengeance.

Picking up minutes after the end of Casino Royale, Bond is being chased while holding Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) in the trunk of his car.  He brings White to M (Judi Dench) for the interrogation of his part in Vesper’s (Eva Green) death and who his partners are.  Mr. White laughs and tells them that they are everywhere.  To prove it, M’s bodyguard shoots at her.  Bond goes after him and kills him.  His death leads them to an underground criminal association that nobody seems to be aware of and goes by Quantum.  Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) is the head of an environmental company who promises changes but has his own agenda and is a part of Quantum.  Bond meets Greene’s girl Camille (Olga Kurylenko) and they team up to take down the men they believe are responsible for the death of their loved ones.  This forces Bond to go rogue and team up with an old alliance to stay undercover.

The story doesn’t have the same flare as Casino Royale.  But it isn’t meant to.  Bond wants to quench his thirst for revenge and he does a damn good job of it.  If he isn’t chasing a villain he is killing them.  From the opening credits you are left breathless with the sequences that laugh in the face of danger.  Daniel Craig proves once again he was the right choice as the new Bond.  His jaw is set with anger and his gaze is piercing and filled with pain.  But yet he remains composed and smooth to get the job done.  Only when he finally lets his guard down for just a split second do you see how much he is hurting for his lost love.  Olga Kurylenko is satisfactory as the new Bond girl.  No girl would have measured up to Vesper Lynd.  And that’s how it should be.  She is easy on the eyes and has her own agenda with no romantic interest in Bond.  Mathieu Amalric as the wicked Greene is nothing special.  It doesn’t help that him and former baddie Le Chiffre could be interchanged and it would go unnoticed.  But the purpose of Quantum of Solace lies in satisfying Bond’s revenge.  And for that, it is a job well done.  And a Bond movie wouldn’t be complete without beautiful locales.  From Italy to the UK to Austria, it doesn’t disappoint.

The brief appearance of Agent Strawberry Fields (Gemma Arterton) who is sent to bring Bond back is a bit of campiness that is out of place in this new world of Bond.  Recalls awful Bond girl Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) from The World is Not Enough

Bond has lost his true love and he will chase and kill anyone who was a part of it.  He can’t trust anyone.  This is a worthy addition to the Bond legacy.  Action, action and more action is what you will get and you will like it.
