“Shooter”
"Shooter" Directed by: Antoine Fuqua. Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Michael Pena, Danny Glover, Kate Mara, Lane Garrison.
In the action-thriller "Shooter", directed by Antoine Fuqua, a man finds himself on the run from a mysterious military group. Unfortunately for them, that man- Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg), isn’t as easy a target as they hoped.
Bob Lee Swagger is a man who spent years serving his country in the military. As a trained long-distance shooter, one of the best in the world in fact, Swagger finds himself in the middle of top-secret military operations. The film's opening scenes show Bob shooting down enemy targets. His fellow soldier Donnie (Lane Garrison) gets killed in the aftermath. The military force who put him there in the first place abandons him.
Three years later a more rugged Swagger is living a solitary existence in the mountains. He lives there happily until Colonel Issac Johnson (Danny Glover) tracks him down. Col. Johnson works for a top-secret group that is tracking a threat on the President's life. They need Swagger's expertise to thwart a possible assassination attempt on the President's life. Initially he resists, but then he relents after they appeal to his spirit of patriotism.
Swagger spends the next few days scouting the possible locations for the assassination attempt. He concludes that Philadelphia is the only city where the potential shooter could take the long-distance type shot they are expecting. On the day of the President's visit, Swagger helps Col. Johnson stop the attempt. Suddenly a shot hits near the podium and Swagger himself is shot twice.
Soon Swagger realizes his dealings with Col. Johnson were part of an elaborate plan to pin the assassination on him. Bearing two bullet wounds and injuries from a fall out a window, Swagger narrowly escapes the scene.
Swagger spends the rest of the film attempting to unravel the truth behind the plot, prove his innocence and more importantly, stay alive. Despite a few unfocused characters, the film is as unwavering as Swagger’s search for the truth. It’s a twisty, thrilling, and intelligent film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
