Lynch (One) (2007)

Eric Basset of the Lynch camp has been quoted saying that the film is "somewhere between a documentary and a David Lynch movie," however, mimesis of style as homage is not simply enough to procure a documentary.  The technique is old hat (sans rabbit).

Lynch One is the first of a series, a docu-trilogy, compiled from more than two years of footage and significant time spent living with Lynch, studying his creative process.  The filming began in 2004 with Lynch’s trip to Lodz to photograph Polish factories, and continues on with insight into his conception and execution of Inland Empire.  The three blackANDwhite films focus most acutely on the method of Inland Empire – a film which Lynch calls “an experiment” - as distinct from and related to his other works.

With obvious technical prowess, disciplined thought and aesthetic majesty, the documentary’s anonymous director(s) obviously has enough know-how to take the material further.  Eye candy for sure, but nothing earth shattering.  The film focuses narrowly in on the subject while minimizing the observer’s (known simply as blackANDwhite) role.  It seems rather film-schoolish in the sense of the protégé who learns at the foot of the master rather than cultivating distinction in his/her own rite.

The DVD extra seemed somewhat redundant to the film itself and didn’t particularly enhance the overall appeal.  A half hour segment of Lynch2 appears on the DVD release of Inland Empire.
