match and the soldier has a rabbit. They lay down their weapons
and share a meal, doing their best to understand
each other across the language gap. As the day comes to a close, the
soldier's wound reaches a crisis point and it's up to the medic
to try and save him.

Director Statement.
I wanted to tell a story about two characters that could not communicate through speaking. That is how “STARS” first came about.

Setting the backdrop during World War II was an immediate choice. I have always been fascinated by this dark time in history. What captivated me the most was not the death and despair that came out of this time but the small acts of kindness that would shine through. Simply put, I believe that every human is inherently good.

My intent with this film is to explore what society would deem a monster. CARL the main character in this film is a Nazi. Now I am not sympathetic to the Nazi Regimen as an ideal by any means but I feel that the Nazi’s themselves had fallen victim to their own acts. That being said this piece was tailored to show the tortured aftermath of Carl a Nazi medic’s chance at redemption.

We see this film from the prospective of Carl. He is a simple man that got caught up in a war he did not believe in. Hence he is a deserter. At first MOE, the American Soldier is very hostel toward Carl. Once Carl shows Moe a picture of his dead family Moe then realizes that he too is a human with emotions. They both realize that although they are very different they are also very alike.

Director Statement
I approached the making of Save the World as the last step stone to make a feature film. I personally like stories of people who live right on the edge, risking their social status, steady income and problem-free relationships, and decide to sacrifice all that for something purer and deeper like finding a meaning to life. My films are usually about relationships but, above all, about the constant fight between what we want to do and what we have to do.

Lost Night

Written, Directed and Produced by Chris Loizou

DP Jorge Luengas

Only six months in London, Bangladeshi cab driver Mahmood picks up Dory a transvestite from a notorious gay club. Dory’ s face is bruised and blooded and it’s clear he’s just been in a fight. On their journey to the river Thames in central London, it seems diversity is the only link between them until they share a life saving moment that reveals a closer connection, linking the unlikely couple and bonding them for life.

HD, UK, 2007, 13 minutes

Director Statement
Rubbing shoulders with race, gender and diversity, living in a city such as London, I thought would make a good subject and story which is universal in today’s society. So, I set about making a short film that would hold the audience’s attention to the characters and felt as much like a journey with them as the characters ‘Dory’ a transvestite and ‘Mahmood’ a Bangladeshi cab driver, did with each other in their journey to the river Thames. I also wanted to write something that was constructed in three acts. A beginning, middle and end is somehow more satisfying as a piece of story telling for the audience.

Having shot on most formats, I decided to shoot on HD as the first time I used this format I found it liberating for me as the director to just keep rolling and also for the actors, who had fewer interuptions and waiting around, therefore being able to keep their character work consistent and ultimately more believable. Also, shooting at night in the back of a car in central London, it was really the only choice.

I have become a big fan of HD and realise as technology moves on it is slowly finding it’s feet for professionals. There seems like there is nothing you can’t achieve on HD as you would on film. I think the secret is not to compare, HD is not film and never will be, but it is a format to be taken seriously.
