Tron
How much more ahead of its time does a film need to be to get a little respect around here. Tron was definitely ahead of its time, dealing with concepts and ideas that most people wouldn't even be playing with for ten more years, at least.
Tron, in one regard is simple, as it is a story of a computer programmer named Kevin played by Jeff Bridges, who is sucked into the virtual environment and must fight for survival. How is this possible? Well, how Kevin is "sucked" into the world of Tron, well now, there is no REAL explanation for that. I am simplifying the story as it is robust for a Disney film. Regardless, once inside this virtual world, Kevin must try to find a way out and encounters numerous wonders along the way.
If you have not seen the film some of the visuals will astound you, especially when considering that the year is 1982. The now famous light cycles of Tron, the Frisbee, the solar sail are all impressive visuals. Arguably, Tron is one of the most overlooked accomplishments in visual and special effects ever, especially where the general public is concerned. Tron is a must see for anyone who loves science-fiction films and/or technology.
What Was Cool:
-Just about everything in Tron is cool. Again, a modern overlooked milestone in the history of filmmaking.
What Was Stupid:
-I can't claim to understand what went wrong but the film never received the industry praise or public praise it deserves. Perhaps the topic of the film, namely computer technology, was still too frightening and too remote for most audience members. In short, Tron may have made early 1980's industry pros and average ticket buyers feel a wee bit stupid, which is never a good thing.
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
-While not a perfect film, Tron is extraordinarily inventive and many future films owe much of their success to this overlooked gem. The visual and special effects teams in particular did something special.
