Tin Man
Here Is What You Need To Know:
Growing up I was a huge fan of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, so there was little chance that I was going to miss the Sci Fi Channel mini-series Tin Man. It’s a mixed bag. Without divulging too much of the plot Tin Man is a cute quasi-reimagining of the classic, at least in a few ways.
This new reimagining incorporates more science than magic; however, the mystery of magic is still at the heart of the story. While there is much that was creative and visually interesting, there is much that also borders on repulsive. Sounds impossible? read “What Was Stupid” below.
What Was Cool:
Tin Man has a script that is, at moments innovative, but often reverts to primitive cliches just when it is on the verge of being truly memorable and districtive. Yet, overall, it was fun to see Oz from a different perspective with a different take on the characters that we remember from our collective past. Characters such as the Tin Man and the Scarecrow are redrawn in a impressively innovative manner that will probably amuse and please most Oz fans (the movie Oz, not the HBO series). Many of the visual effects are nicely done, especially by television standards and the physical setting of British Columbia is used with great skill and adds greatly to the overall quality of the series.
What Was Stupid:
Unfortunately, there was a lot, a whole lot that was stupid, really stupid. First, and it’s a biggie folks, Zoeey Deschanel, as the lead “D.G.” Wow. She is a decent actress, but sort of a one-note actress, and that note is mean and surly. Deschanel, doesn’t do sympathic or “nice” well and in this part she is required to do both as she is suppose to care about her traveling companions. Unfortuately for Tin Man, Deschanel’s “D.G.” seems pretty “bitchy” for the most part. I know the idea was “strong independent, modern woman,” but Deschanel’s acting comes across as self-centered and phony. While the series mostly centered on the relationship between women, the executive producers, producers and director are all men, which is remarkably puzzling.
