The One
Here Is What You Need To Know:
James Wong and Glen Morgan have done some fantastic work together, including the very overlooked television series Space: Above and Beyond, which was full of twists and turns, excellent plots, well-drawn characters and character development and visual effects.
The One deals with some very high minded science-fiction concepts, in particular, the notion of multiple universes. There is an organization, the MVA, that polices crime between universes and has officers it sends between universes to capture felons. A criminal named Gabriel, played by Jet Li determines that he can become almost god-like by killing versions of himself that exist in other universe and has done so at a fantastic rate. The One is difficult to forget as it sports some rather impressive visual effects that are unique and truly stand out. This is definitely one of those films that a lot of people missed and after seeing The One you may be left wonder why, in this day and age of the sequel, we haven't seen The Two. Science-fiction fans will love Space: Above and Beyond and they will love The One.
What Was Cool:
-The One explores the intriguing idea of multiple universes in a new and fun way. Many will be reminded of the television show Sliders, before it totally began to suck on the Sci-Fi Channel. The One is a bit like Sliders with millions of dollars to burn and much more creativity.
-It is impossible to review The One and not stress how cool the visual effects and visuals are in the film? Where else do you get to see someone murdered between a motorcycle sandwich? That's right, a motorcycle sandwich.
-I guess if you are some weirdo breeder girl who is into Jet Li, then this is your wet dream, isn't it? As there a Jet Li's all over the place in this film and he does a good job for the most part.
What Was Stupid:
-Obviously a lot of the science adds up to hooey, as my grandfather literally always said, yes I had the grandfather that said hooey, but let's give them points for bringing some cool ideas to the brain dead.
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
-Wong and Morgan are awesome and some day will hit it very big with a marvelous project, I just know it.
Overlooked Performance/Accomplishment:
-The entire visual effects department really made The One a great treat for the eyes.
-The DVD has some decent extras.
