Superman: Doomsday Movie Review

Here Is What You Need To Know:

Superman: Doomsday is more of the same, in that, you get yet more Superman.  I will not go into the whole “don’t we need new superheros stuff” much anyway, but we do.  Superman has been done so very much, wouldn’t we all benefit from seeing some new characters?  Well, anyway, Superman: Doomsday is actually a better time than the last big-budget Superman offering if you ask me.  What’s not to like we get to see Superman die via the hands of a completely mysterious thing called “Doomsday” and we see Superman kill people-well sort of anyway.   Other than that all the basics are there and accounted for, Lex is still evil and Lois is still annoying and abrasive.  Ah memories.  Its flawed for sure but Superman: Doomsday does touch on several ideas that other Superman films have stayed well clear of and in this regards Superman: Doomsday is a real success.  I mean come on we see Superman fire a gun, that’s worth something.

What Was Cool:
As mentioned above seeing Superman kill, shoot a gun and die, well its all sort of gangsta isn’t it?  The script also has some nice turns that you don’t either see coming or instinctively just assume the writers and producers won’t have the guts to do, and that is nice.

What Was Stupid:
Why did the producers feel it was necessary to cut Adam Baldwin, Anne Heche, of all people and James Marsters a paycheck?  All those starving actors in Hollywood too busy being told they aren’t good enough at auditions to play a carrot in a commercial to do a little voice over work?  Oh well.  But that stupidity is a minor issue compared to the glaring script hole that is “Doomsday.”  Come on guys, let’s assume that some of your audience might just want a little explanation as to what the hell Doomsday is and where it comes from.  This was really sad work.

The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
Genius-um, none really, but the script is better than expected even with its flaws.

Overlooked Performance/Accomplishment:
     No genius at work, sorry.

Story B- (At least it wasn’t totally predictable.  This is sort of a shocking fact.)
Use of Science  B
Acting C
Portrayal of Women  C+
(Yeah, Lois needs to be saved, but well, it is Lois and she does at least try to be the hero.  So, I guess that is some kind of progress.)
Quality of Animation  B-
Enjoyability Grade B-
Home Theater/HD Factor B-
Gut Check (Level of Studio Executive Guts)  C+
(I will give the suits a little credit for the script, as it has a couple of surprises.)
Overall Innovation C+
Overall Grade B-
(Superman: Doomsday has a few big problems but at least it’s a little bit of “new” in the very warn Superman world.)

A Little Fact About Cherie:
I forced my brother to dress as Superman one year so I could torment him with green rocks.
