Sphere
Here Is What You Need To Know:
Sphere is yet another Michael Crichton novel come to life. The plot is something that you will feel that you have somehow seen a few times before, as the US government finds a very advanced space craft that has been resting on the oceans floor for several hundred years. The explanation of what it is and how it came to rest on the ocean's floor isn't all that fantastic but I won't give it away. Sphere could have been a lot better and from what I have heard the book was better, but the concept and origins of the Sphere just seem like old news somehow, so I doubt the book was THAT much better than the so-so movie.
What Was Cool:
-The effects involving the sphere were pretty good.
-There are some nice underwater shots.
-Sharon Stone was still relatively attractive
-Some of the costumes were pretty cool, but even here more imagination could have been displayed.
What Was Stupid:
-Aren't you sick of Dustin Hoffman? He pretty much ruins almost any film for me.
-The story is too similar to other plot lines most of us have seen in the past.
-Endings are hard, we all know that, but come on! This is one lackluster ending.
-The casting is poor and really hurt the film, as none of the leads are really believable in the roles and this, of course, takes a bit of a wrecking ball to the whole film. Stone, Hoffman and Jackson are not believable as brilliant scientists, no way.
-What was definitely stupid was not allowing the audience to learn more about the Sphere and see its origins.
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
No genius or geniuses to be found on this one.
Overlooked Performance/Accomplishment:
The cinematography by Adam Greenberg was nice job with what limitations at hand.
