Slipstream

Here Is What You Need To Know:

Some films fall through the cracks and you wonder why oh why? Other films slip through the cracks and its easier to understand. Slipstream, isn't bad, its just not very inspired and doesn't slice into any new ground.

Slipstream follows a scientist, Stuart, played by Sean Astin who develops a portable, cell-phonish time-travel device. Stuart has a crush on a bank teller but he can't quite get her to go out with him, so he fails and fails again but uses his trusty and might I add PORTABLE time travel device to rewind so he can ask her out again. You breeders. Stuart keeps this up until finally a group of bank robbers show up and cancel his plans. Do you get it yet? Its the same old tired bank robbery story but with the time travel twist. Fun, uh? No.

I am not impressed. Sorry to say, Slipstream never develops much beyond its jumping off point. There are nice visuals here and there, but you won't be blown away. Science-fiction fans who feel that they have seen it all, may have missed this one and from that perspective Slipstream is worth a look as it has a few moments.

What Was Cool:

-The occasional strong visual highlights Slipstream.

-Director David van Eyssen shows talent and we may see him on a more high profile project in the future. The problem is the formulaic screenplay.

What Was Stupid:

-Just painting a bank robbery movie with a coat of time travel paint just doesn't get me all hot and bothered. Dullsville man, dullsville.

-A handheld, portable time-travel device? Come on now, at least try.

Story D
Use of Science B
Acting C
Portrayal of Women D ( Definitely falls into the “save me big strong man” camp.)
Visuals-VFX and SFX B
Visuals-Set Design/Props B ( The time travel gadget is well done.)
Wardrobe/Costumes C
Style/Sex Appeal C
Enjoyability Grade C-
Home Theater/HD Factor B
Gut Check (Level of Studio Executive Guts) C+
Overall Innovation D
Overall Grade C- ( The visuals barely save the weak script that isn't as clever as all involved think it is.)

A Little Fact About Cherie:
-My current favorite show right now is probably Battlestar Galactica, which like Slipstream, airs on the Sci-Fi Channel.
