Returner
Here Is What You Need To Know:
Returner is one of those films that film buffs, especially science-fiction fans, might want to check out because it is so novel and so off-beat. You probably haven't seen anything quite like it as there are some really sharp visual effects and sets done with a Japanese flare.
Returner just feels different. But, like so many Japanese science-fiction and anime projects, Returner suffers from a bit of a flimsy script. A girl from about a hundred years in the future travels back in time to stop an alien invasion. In the past, roughly our present, she finds a gun-totting, trench coat loving bad ass to help her do her bidding. Not super original but it has its fun moments and is definitely a change of pace for the science-fiction fan that feels they have seen everything.
What Was Cool:
-There are some nice visuals and some eye-catching visual effects in Returner.
-The direction by Takashi Yamazaki, who co-wrote the weak script is pretty well done and much credit should be given to Akira Sako and Kozo Shibazaki for the cinematography.
What Was Stupid:
-So much of the character interaction seems unrealistic and forced.
-The visual effects, while often eye catching lack originality,
-The plot does seem to lack focus from time to time, as the script needed more work and more innovative thought.
-Returner? Now that is a bad, bad name for a film. Something else was needed, don't you think?
The Film's Real Genius or Geniuses:
-The cinematography in Returner has probably been overlooked in the West.
Overlooked Performance/Accomplishment:
-There is some good gun play that helps keep the action level high.

A Little Fact About Cherie:
I love the idea of going to Asia and have my fingers crossed that HDFEST will send me there soon.
