No Escape

Here Is What You Need To Know:

No Escape is one of those rare films, whose title sets it up nicely to be mocked. Such as Titanic. If your film can easily have a joke attached to the title, you're asking for it. But No Escape isn't a bad film, in fact it is a right-wing republican fantasy gone horribly a muck. No Escape is another one of those, “welcome to your prison island where anything goes" movies. Science-fiction fans know they have seen some version of this before and after, with films such as Escape from NY and Escape from LA and soon Escape from America, Fortress, parts of The Chronicles of Riddick and there are others.

No Escape is a little different in that it really dives into the “society” that the mad men that inhabit the island create. Think of Dante's version of Lord of the Flies, only with insane he-men, and you have it. If futuristic prison flicks float your boat and you like it gritty, then No Escape is one you may have missed.

What Was Cool:

-Ray Liotta and Lance Henriksen do some fine work in the film.

-The Mad Max feel to the film works better than one might imagine as it creates a gritty universe where almost anything goes.

What Was Stupid:

-One big criticism-life is portrayed as being a great deal more pleasant and civil than what would probably actually happen. I mean its bleak, but it would be truly hell on earth, even the occasional cannibalistic party doesn't quite cover it.

Overlooked Accomplishment:

The costume department must have logged some serious, serious hours.

Overall Grade B-
( No Escape hits what it aims for, but don't expect too much. It is what it is.)

A Little Fact About Cherie:
I'm not generally a big fan of prison films.
