Jim's Retirement

Directed by Tomas Woodbridge

Summary: A short animated film in which we observe the deteriorating mental state of a man trapped in a boring office. The film's conclusion is intentionally ambiguous. We seem to leave the protagonist in a happier place than we found him.

2008, UK

Artist's Statement

This animation drops into the life of an ordinary office worker who- midway through an ordinary day- loses his grip on sanity.

This was my first attempt at making an animated short, created during my final year of University.
My aim was to hold viewers' attention with strong cinematography and an appealing lead character. The 'plot' was left intentionally vague, but the film was meant to come across as a lighthearted poke at the frustrations of the modern workplace.

Many thanks to everyone who helped along the way.

Tomas Woodbridge – Biography

I was born in 1987 in London, England, and became an early and dedicated fan of cartoons, animation and whimsical humour. After achieving top grades in my final school exams - which included art, physics, English and philosophy - I went to Bournemouth to study at the UK's National Centre for Computer Animation. There I learned about the principles of animation, computer programming, and the highlights and pitfalls of flat-sharing.

I graduated in 2008 with a first-class BA Honours degree. Before and during my degree course I also worked as a freelance illustrator, and have had illustrations featured in two published books (How To Calm a Challenging Child, Foulsham Publishing, and Lifting the Lid on Depression, Diggory Press).

Since September 2008 I have been working as an animator and Maya generalist at Blue Zoo Productions in London. During this period I’ve had the opportunity to develop my animation skills in a professional context, and also try my hand at character rigging, modeling and concept drawing.

I’m still fascinated by film and animation, and I also have a passion for interactive media and videogames. In the future I hope to have the chance to work in each of these creative mediums.
