RV-Robin Williams Covered In Feces, Oh You Bet I Want to See That!
Okay, trust me, you are not more shocked by this than I am, but I enjoyed RV. Yes, I enjoyed a Robin Williams, goofy slapstick film. What can I say? I thought I would watch maybe ten-minutes then move onto something I could tolerate reviewing, but no, I enjoyed the film. Yes, yes and yes, it is stupid, but it is also very funny at points and you might laugh even if with a degree of embarrassment. RV is one of those really silly films that you might watch and say to yourself, “Alan is an idiot for liking this,” and maybe your right; maybe it just struck a cord somehow. Or, maybe just perhaps it was the sight of Robin Williams being covered by a fecal geyser that did it for me. Oh yeah people its in there-Robin Williams covered in crap. Its almost as thought Hollywood read my mind, it’s a little scary actually.
The story couldn’t be any more tired and done-overworked executive has to cancel his family trip to Hawaii due to work but instead of telling them, gets an RV and forces them to drive cross country to where his business meeting is-only the family doesn’t know it. He stays up all night working and tries to make sure they have fun at the same time and on and on. You get the idea, there is nothing original in the set up, but the humor is in the execution. The characters are all cardboard clichéd cutouts, but the acting is good, which helps make up for it a bit. Its escapist, moronic and you’ve seen it all before, but somehow RV is surprisingly funny.
Story C- (Honestly, perhaps I am being generous here, but while very clichéd, the set ups for the physical humor jokes are pretty good.)
Acting B- (Robin Williams keeps his drug induced bullcrap at a minimum and that truly helps the film. Whatever mood stabilizers they had him on really are impressive.)
Visuals B- (Some of the physical humor and sight gags are pretty entertaining.)
Originality/Innovation C- (Only the set-ups for the physical humor is original. The rest of RV should stand for Redundant Very.)
Enjoyability Grade B- (Somehow it is funny, could just be the Robin Williams covered in crap thing. Hollywood subconsciously knows what we want to see and sometimes they deliver.)
Home Theater/HD Factor B
Overall Grade B- (This grade shocks me more than you. The only thing that frightens me is that RV made money, enough money that they may make a sequel. Now that film would suck beyond belief, so let’s all hope they just leave RV where it is as a fluke.)
