The Nutty Professor-Yeah, Pretty Nutty I Suppose

Do you feel like another remake kids? Well, I sure hope so, because that is what you are getting with The Nutty Professor. Lazy executives in Hollywood strike their vengeance upon the masses once more with a remake of the Jerry Lewis classic. This is one of those cases where the remake is actually a fun time due to the progression of technology since the original. In fact it is make-up and digital wizardry, along with some strong acting performances, that make this updated version of The Nutty Professor fly.

Eddie Murphy is perfect as wacky and zany Professor Sherman Klump who is one fat camper that wants to be a thin chap so he can get with the ladies. Of course, something goes wrong, as it always does, and while Klump does loose the weight, he also develops a alter-ego/split personality of sorts as a result of the chemicals in his system. What ensues is a great deal of situational comedy and it took about 60 writers to pull the script together, but it works. The success of the film is due to three main factor: name recognition, Eddie Murphy and the fact that The Nutty Professor is pretty darn funny. All three of these factors combined to make The Nutty Professor a true hit, bringing in over $200 million dollars.

The make-up, fat suits, digital effects together with Murphy's odd characters all add up to a entertaining time. Good supporting performances by Jada Pinkett Smith and Dave Chappell further add to the film's overall quality and feel. What the film could have done without is the musical stylings of David Newman, but if you have read many of my other reviews you already are aware that there are about four guys that are allowed to score films. Not very cool, not very cool. But that issue aside, ignore the music and you will have a good time, just be grateful that its David Newman and not Randy Newman that does the score, okay.

Story B- (The script is funny and there are some nice twists on The Nutty Professor idea.)
Acting A (It is unusual to give a straight up “A” for acting in a comedy but Murphy and most of the cast do a great job.)
Visuals A- (Some of the visual gags of the film board on horrifying.)
Originality/Innovation B
Enjoyability Grade B
Home Theater/HD Factor A
Overall Grade B
(The Nutty Professor is better than expected.)
