The Bourne Supremacy-All We Need Now Is A Television Show!
What makes The Bourne Supremacy a better ride than the first film is that the goofy amnesia crap is no longer present. The second time around, the story focuses on Jason Bourne, played with limp mediocrity by Matt Damon, who has been trying to stay one step ahead of government. Unfortunately for Bourne, he and Marie are eventually found and Bourne has little choice but to take the fight in a different direction.
The Bourne Supremacy's success, as it made well over $200 million, is due to a thirst for spy-action films and the name recognition of the first film. Obviously, this falls into the sequel category, one of a handful of types of films you are now allowed to watch, along with television show spin-off, films based on comic books or video games and films based upon books. The Bourne Supremacy is great in that it is both a sequel and based on a book. We now need a television show based on the Bourne films, then we can have the pleasure of having a movie based on THAT television show. Perhaps, after a few years a video game based on the television show could be produced. Oh, you only think I am trying to be cute. This is exactly what is going to happen with the Stargate television show and they'll have “novels” as well! What a happy day, don't you think?
Gone is director Doug Liman who has been replaced by Paul Greengrass, who does a good job in keeping up the pacing in a style similar to the first film. Like The Bourne Identity, Supremacy continues to have slick production values and an exciting look, which is undoubtedly the core of much of the film's success. The script, if anything is stronger than the first film and gets the adrenalin pumping more consistently as the action is more on target and less diluted with all the “who the hell am I and can I act,” crap that was thrown in the first one.
These movies will not change your world, but if you like spy-action flicks they will definitely give you a fix and let's face it part of the reason these films are successful is they are NOT James Bond movies. Haven't we all sort of grown tired of the Bond flicks anyway?
Story B- (Less amnesia means more fun.)
Acting C+ (Damon is barely passable, but most of the rest of the cast is good enough.)
Visuals A-
Originality/Innovation C- (Its hard to give high marks for originality when your film is based off a book from, what the 1980's, come on! Add to this the fact that The Bourne Supremacy is a sequel and you have some real innovation issues.)
Enjoyability Grade B- (This Bourne flick is better than the first one.)
Home Theater/HD Factor A
Overall Grade B- (B- by the “skin of its teeth.” How a movie could have skin, let alone on its teeth, is a different story, but this statement does highlight why learning a foreign language can be so darn difficult.)
