Blade: Trinity-All the Originality Has Been Bleed Out

Blade: Trinity is the third and weakest installment of the Blade Trilogy. Overall, it lacks the originality of the first two films and thus seems as if the series is losing steam. Three movies, three different directors. Gone is del Toro who did a fine job on the second Blade movie as he has been replaced with writer and director David Goyer who also wrote the pilot for Blade: The Television Series. Del Toro apparently passed on Blade to work on Hellboy.

Vampires decided that since they’ve been having such a tough time with the “Daywalker” they would let the federal government take care of him and in Trinity they set Blade up to take the fall for murder. This time around Blade is forced to team up with humans Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Hannibal King, is nearly the Jar-Jar of the Blade Trilogy, and is just a pain to watch. Reynolds over plays the part and seems as though he is just collecting a check in a “horror movie.” Jessica Biel is ridiculous sexy as Abigail Whistler and makes the most of the part she had at her disposal. The script centers mostly around the resurrecting of a powerful vampire named Drake A.K.A. Dracula played very well by Dominic Purcell. Of course there is a high-octane battle sequence at the end that is fun but a bit weird at times.

Overall much of what made the previous two films fun stands intact. What is missing is the originality in the story. We still have new and fun ways of slaughter vampires but it’s a little hollow somehow. I miss the days when slaughtering a vampire meant something. Much is possible when operating in a universe such as Blade and I just wish a little more creativity and effort could have went both into the script and the concept. Goyer has produced some quality scripts penning both Blade and Blade II. Perhaps, it was wearing both hats as director and writer that was the problem, perhaps he simply needs a little time away from the franchise or perhaps its time to find some new, well, dare I say it, blood for the next Blade movie, if and when we see one.
