As Good As It Gets-That's A Pretty Cocky Title

When you tag your movie with the title “As Good As It Gets” it better not suck. As Good As It Gets, not only does not suck, it is really a fine and touching movie that marks one of Jack Nicolson's best performances. Nicolson, who plays Melvin a famous writer with a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder, among many other problems, is fantastic.

Usually, even if Nicolson does a good job in a film, you still feel as if you are watching Jack Nicolson be Jack Nicolson. Few want to say it, but the guy has mainly made a career out of playing the same character to some extent or another. Whether or not he is just being himself, I have no idea, don't know him, but in As Good As It Gets, Nicholson actually begins to move out of his acting comfort zone a bit and it is very entertaining.

As Good As It Get is all about characters, character development, motivation, change and over coming challenges. No doubt it is a quirky film that is full of nearly endless charm and characters that one will instantly identify with in some fashion or another. This is also one of the best projects that the film's director James Brooks has ever been involved with and Brooks helps bring the screenplay that he co-wrote to life. If you haven't seen the film you will appreciate the maturity of not just the presentation but the screenplay and acting performances as well.

The casting in As Good As It Get, is also as good as it gets, as Greg Kinnear truly shows that he is indeed a real actor and not just that “Soup Guy”. Kinnear plays Melvin's next door neighbor, Simon, a gay artist who receives a rather horrible beating. Part of the fun of the film is watching mean-spirited Melvin slowly transform due to his interaction with Simon and the waitress Carol played by Helen Hunt.

As Good As It Gets, is a simply awesome script with phenomenal performances that truly make As Good As It Gets one of the best films of recent years and one of the best dramatic blockbusters ever bringing in over $250 million well-deserved dollars. If you have not seen As Good As It Gets, put it on the top of your list, as it is a great film about people and transformations, not explosions.
