Inside Deep Throat

Watched "inside Deep Throat" the other night. This is a documentary about the famous and controversial adult film that came out in the 1970's.  I have never seen Deep Throat, nor do I intend to, but have remembered hearing a lot about it over the years, so I was pretty interested in watching this. I wasn't too impressed, I must admit.  The documentary focused on the political and social ramifications of the movie and spent hardly no time discussing the movie itself.  That was a bit disappointing to me since there has been so much controversy surrounding the filming of Deep Throat, not just the release of the movie to the public.  However, it was interesting to see how different society was in the 1970's.

some things that I found particularly interesting:

- Apparently, due to the popularity of Deep Throat, many people actually thought adult film was the future of Hollywood.  That more "hard core" scenes would be put into mainstream movies.  Though it is obvious Hollywood shows a lot more now than they used to, I think it is pretty evident that Brad Pitt won't be making any "hard core" movies any time soon.

- Jackie Kennedy Onasis went and saw Deep Throat at the cinema.  Wow!

- The actor in Deep Throat was actually prosecuted for his role in making such "smut."  Not only that, but the laws they used to prosecute him are still on the books today!  That's right, legally, an actor can be put on trial and convicted for making a film that is too controversial or deemed"harmful."

I am not what I would call a "fan of porn" but I am huge fan of freedom of expression and freedom of choice.  To think that, in many ways, Deep Throat paved the way for those rights with regards to film is very interesting. Legal battles, political battles and social battles plagued the release of this film.  Yet, it was this film that paved the way for the huge adult film industry that exists today.  It was this film that sought to change the social norms of women and sexuality.  Regardless of whether it was a good film, a tasteful film or an adult film, it seems to me many modern movies owe at least a little something to Deep Throat.  Without the changes brought on by Deep Throat movies that are considered too sexy or too violent might not be cast, filmed or released.  For that, though I may not like the movie itself, I am greatful.  Overall, I give Inside Deep Throat a grade of C.

Inside Deep Throat gets a grade breakdown as follows:

Story:  C.  I would have liked to have seen it focus more on the actual filming and controversies of that rather than the political issues, but those were interesting none-the-less.

Visuals:  B.  Some of the clips and shots of the time period they showed were really interesting to see.

Originality/Innovation:  B.  Though I would have liked more focus on the actual movie Deep Throat itself, a focus on the social and political ramifications was a fairly unique view that I appreciated seeing.

Enjoyability grade:  B.  It kept my interest, that is for sure.  Good social commentary of the time.

Overall grade:  C.  Not great but not lousy.  Worth a watch for those with an actual interest.
