Failure to Launch
I recently rented Failure to Launch. I am a Sarah Jessica Parker fan (Sex
in the City is one of my favorite shows) and Matthew McConaughey...how can
you NOT love him, I know I do so I thought this could be a fun little movie,
and overall it was.
Matthew McConaughey plays a thirty something guy who still lives with his
parents. Sarah Jessica Parker plays the woman determined to cut the chord
and make him a 'real man.'
This movie is very much a chick flick. It was cute, adorable, witty and had
many moments where a sigh and a small giggle were very appropriate. However, I must warn all women out there: please do NOT try to get your guy
to watch this with you. Believe me, this is not a crossover movie. There
are no action scenes (a minor game of paintball maybe), no sex scenes, no
car chases and no exceptionally hot women. I am not saying all guys only
want those things and I am not being sexist, I just being honest and fair. To fully enjoy this movie for what it is, a complete and total chick flick,
get a group of your best girlfriends together (or just your favorite one),
order Chinese take out (or pizza) and rent this movie. Viewing it in any
other setting just wouldn't be as satisfying.
Though I truly enjoyed this movie, I have to say it was very predictable. Not that that ruined the experience, it didn't, but it felt like I was really watching the classic script unfold - character development, plot,
crisis moment, crisis resolution, conclusion. There was no real originality
in the story itself, but the overall cuteness of the movie was still pretty
high.
I would give this movie an overall rating of B-.
The grading breakdown for Failure to Launch would be as follows:
Story: C-. Though I may not have seen something exactly like it, I very
much felt like I had seen this movie before. There is no other way to
really explain it. And the way the movie played out I could literally SEE
the transitions between the different phases of the script (see what I said
above about classic script unfolding).
Acting: B. This movie didn't involve any major acting skills or techniques
so of course everyone did a good job. How could they not?
Visuals: A+. Matthew McConaughey.
Originality/Innovation: C-. I have already beaten this horse to death, but
I don't feel a D is warranted, so I will stick with my C-.
Enjoyablity: B+. In the proper setting, with the proper audience, this movie is really fun to watch. If you liked Sex in the City, you will like
Failure to Launch - it is geared toward pretty much the same crowd.
Overall Grade: B-. This certainly wasn't worth the price of admission to a
cinema but well worth the rental fee.
