“Twist of Faith ”
Often when people find themselves in the midst of despair they turn to their faith to give them the strength to see better times ahead. But when their religious community is the source of deep frustration and anger, it is more than challenging to make sense of their world. In the documentary film “Twist of Faith” the story of one mans abuse within the Catholic Church gives people the opportunity to see how serious this position can be.
“Twist of Faith” illustrates the story of Tony Comes a victim of abuse that came from the hand of his former priest. Comes now a 34-year-old husband and father is forced to deal with his past as he finds himself living five houses away from his assailant. Comes appears to be an ordinary guy, with a wife and kids, but the torture that remains within himself is too much for any person to have to live with.
In “Twist of Faith” Comes and his wife Wendy speak intimately about how Tony’s abuse by a former priest has affected their life and family. They talk about how their faith has been destroyed. They talk to the children about predators. They are completely honest about such a horrible experience.
“Twist of Faith” follows Comes’ world from his meetings with his lawyers to marriage counseling sessions and to meetings with other men who have been abused by the same priest. It chronicles his anger and his despair. As a viewer there are moments when you cringe because the emotions are so real.
Director Kirby Dick allows the couple to have their own cameras for which they use to tell their own stories and how the abuse has plays a part in their lives. These moments are key to the film because it reinforces the significance of the situation on their lives. Clearly this problem does not only affect the victims, it affects every relationship that they have in their lives.
The best thing that comes from this film is the education that it has to offer. There are many times when people hear about this type of abuse in the press, but they cannot connect it with a human life. The awareness that this film brings is absolutely necessary. Everyday there is something about this issue in the media and a film like this does justice because it spreads more awareness.
