“Syriana”

If the United States has not lost the trust and understanding of most intelligent Americans by now, a viewing of the film “Syriana” is likely to put a final nail in the coffin. The lies, threats, bribery and double crossing that are illustrated in this film represent a sort of truth that many Americans may not be willing to accept. “Syriana” brings a message of greed to the public that needs to be addressed on many levels.

“Syriana” is a hard film to watch. If the viewer is not absolutely familiar with the subject matter of this film, they may grow restless in trying to figure it out. The plot of the film is complex. It deals with the many problems that the CIA has to deal with on an international level especially within the arena of oil and weaponry.

With high profile actors lending their talent to the stage of this intellectual thriller, the seriousness of this issue becomes a little glamorized. George Clooney plays Bob Barnes a CIA agent who is uncontrollable by his confidants and superiors. Matt Damon plays Bryan Woodman an economist who uses the death of his son to his advantage of blackmailing an emirate and Amanda Peet who plays his wife Julie Woodman who becomes fed up with her husband and his duties.

There appears to be a few different stories happening at once in the film, which also lends to confusing people. It seems that you have the oil executives, the CIA, the economist and the personal family dramas all occurring within the same plot. All the characters are dealing with a grand fear of the Middle Eastern nations giving into China and putting a serious risk on the safety of the United States,

While the film moves through a number of scenarios it offers a much-needed realistic view on a subject that may have never reached as many people if it were not a movie. The subject matter of this film seems to be only newsworthy, but the writer and director worked together to make the message receivable by a larger audience. This film may make people who understand the message think about their beliefs and morals. On the contrary, it may not be quite as successful amongst people who get lost in the intellectual and political language that the film is filled with.
