“Jesus Camp ”
A lot of people talk about going to bible camp as a child. They talk about meeting new friends and making out in the bushes. They emphasize the fact that bible camp was just an excuse for their parents to get them out of the house. In the documentary film “Jesus Camp” an alarming statement about the new type of bible camp is revealed.
“Jesus Camp” is a film that takes a close look at what happens behind the doors of the “Kids On Fire Summer Camp” conveniently located outside of Devils Lake, North Dakota. A woman named Becky Fisher who serves the Evangelical community runs the camp with the help of her ministry. The film follows three kids: Levi, Rachael and Victoria on their journey to camp.
The documentary outlines such issues as home schooling, creationism and abortion within the realm of the Evangelism. In one scene the children are featured stretching their hands in the air praying for George Bush to overturn Roe V. Wade shouting “righteous judges, righteous judges.” In another scene while one of the main characters is at a local bowling alley, she goes up to a woman whom she doesn’t know and she starts preaching to her about god and how god loves her.
The footage is shocking and frightening at the same time because as the viewer you feel bad for these children because they do not even have a chance to form their own opinions about god or religion themselves. In an interview with Air America’s Mike Papantonio Fischer refuses to accept accusations of brainwashing. In another part of the film Pastor Ted Haggard appears to be laughing at the children who anxiously ask him questions.
Directors Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing do a good job of remaining objective in this piece. To many people this film may present such a bizarre idea, but to people familiar with this environment they may feel that they are praising their beliefs. In regards to the cinematography, there are some really beautiful moments where the camera captures these peaceful shots.
As disturbing and obsessive as this film is, it is a must see because in liberal America it is very easy to forget about the large percentage of conservative America that exists. “Jesus Camp” is shocking on so many levels. It really makes you think about the future of religion in America.
