“Inside Deep Throat”

It is hard to believe that after so many years the subject of porn still creates such controversy. In 1972 a film by the name of “Deep Throat” created some of the largest conflict between politics, society and freewill. Today the topic continues to push buttons, but the real lessons of this film remain in the affect of how the movie changed the lives of the people that were involved in making the film. “Inside Deep Throat” is a documentary film that reveals the reality behind this epic motion picture.

Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato take a look at the porn classic “Deep Throat” in a manor that may shock its viewers a second time around. The reality of “Deep Throat” is that it was innovative. It was made for $25,000 dollars and it went on to gross more than $600 million dollars. But the story behind the scenes is one that is truly much more educational than the one that entertained its viewers eyes.

“Inside Deep Throat” exposes the lives of Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems. Lovelace is explained as a lost soul who was pushed into the film by her controlling boyfriend. Reems who was originally a crewmember of the film found his way in front of the camera when the filmmaker, Gerard Damiano found himself in Florida without a male lead. Nobody knew what they were about to get into.

After “Deep Throat” was released it faced major scrutiny from the public and the government. It found itself being banned in 23 states and removed from theaters at a shocking rate. The stars of the film received praise but they also received criticism and legal charges. Reems was the subject of a high profile obscenity trail and faced five years in prison. But all this attention seemed to make people that much more interested in its content, leading to its high gross numbers. But nobody involved in the film was compensated for the film success because there were no residual contracts and the mob was running its distribution.

After “Deep Throat” Lovelace and Damiano battled with their demons. Lovelace turned against the porn industry when she joined forces with Anti-Porn activists and Damiano turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with the pressures that he faced. The film stigmatized the two; they could not shake the fame that they acquired with its success.

Through interviews with crewmembers, family members, celebrities, lawyers and theatre owners, Bailey and Barbato unleash the truth behind “Deep Throat”. “Inside Deep Throat” is a sad but compelling story that is surprising on many levels.
