“Conversations with Other Women ”

When you are young you fall in love. You believe that the first man or woman to love you is the one that is going to love you forever. You become infatuated and addicted to this love, and when it doesn’t work out it takes you years to figure out what the hell happened. But then the most confusing part comes when you realize, all that confusion and work and then it takes just one minute to bring you back to that place in time.

In the film “Conversation’s with Other Women” an old couple is brought together again after years of being apart. When they are brought face to face, they use their wit and experience to raise confusing but flirty banter. As the viewer you spend the first half of the film trying to figure out if they did really know each other in the past, or are they complete strangers? As the film goes on you begin to understand that they did indeed love each other at one time, but that was a very different time.

The main characters of the film are The Man and The Woman. Aaron Eckhart plays The Man and Helena Bonham Carter played The Woman. As they exist in the present, it is almost hard to imagine that these two people were once attracted to each other. They seem so different. But that is probably why it didn’t work out.

The most important thing about this film is the way it is presented to the viewer. The film was shot entirely in a split screen. This concept is so effective. Obviously no two people think exactly alike. When two people experience the same thing, their stories are always a little bit different. The purpose of using the split screen in this film was to emphasize that reality. What is interesting about this effect is that as the viewer I felt myself trying to figure out whose side I was on. So not only did the split screen separate the characters, but it also made them have different sides.

The focus of the film is the idea that a great attraction can and will stay with you forever. No matter how many times you play the situation over and over in your head, no matter how many times you try to understand or comprehend the situation, you can’t because the situation is not made up of one individual. “Conversation’s with Other Women” is a wonderfully thought out and executed film. It is the type of film that makes you think, and it is still entertaining.
