Film Trailer
Film Synopsis: Supernova is a surreal journey into the world of alchemy. The film narrates the fantastical transmutation process that takes place when a character is born from a tear drop and ultimately transform into a star in the cosmos. The animation takes place in a lyrical universe in which every element has a symbolic meaning that explains the transformations that the main character goes through. The film is an attempt to show how the hermetic meaning of the universe is visually implicit in everything that is a part of it.
Visually, Supernova was inspired by the work of painters from different periods but who share and interest for alchemy, the surreal and the absurd which are three key elements of the film such as Hieronymus Bosch, Giuseppe Archimboldo, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dali. Supernova was also inspired by literary reference especially from the short stories of the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges and the poems of the surreal French writer Benjamin Peret.
Quote from Director on HD
"I think HD is great because it allows students and indie filmmakers to produce high quality work without spending a lot of money."
Supernova was conceived as a computer animated film due to the unlimited capabilities that the medium offers for spontaneity and improvisation at any part of the production process. All the modeling, animation and rendering for the film was done using Maya 6.5. All the compositing was done both in Shake and After Effects. The film took a year to be completed
The music of the film was generously provided by: The Edgewalker Experimental Instruments Consort. It was extracted from the album Peering Over. The Edgewalker Experimental Instruments Consort is a group of musicians and composers who improvise and compose music for original instruments that Tom Nunn has invented. This music was chosen due to its improvisational nature which is an essential element of the film.
