Synopsis:
‘China Power’, is a dynamic film about a burgeoning vibrant art scene, at a time when the world is looking east.
It’s an exploration of how Chinese Art has caught the world’s attention and how the art market is developing as fast as the country’s economy.
Once considered off-beat and exotic, Chinese contemporary art is now at its peak, with previously unimaginable prices achieved at international auction.
Chinese art has developed rapidly since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1979. ‘China Power’ charts the history of contemporary art through its key movements and events.
The artists featured in the film live and work in China, enjoying the current climate for artistic expression, whilst benefiting from the critical acclaim of the West. They are the ‘rock stars’ of the contemporary art world, living a lifestyle more synonymous with New York than the Peoples Republic of China.
In a time of great change, as China struggles to balance capitalism with communism, a new wave of modern art must find its voice.
Everyday images of Chinese life, evocative landscapes and cityscapes juxtapose and illuminate the current social climate for artistic practice.
‘China Power’ speaks to young filmmakers, curators, and critics as well as investigating the burgeoning gallery scene in Beijing and Shanghai.
Contemporary Chinese art is reaching out, crossing boundaries and searching for its position on the global stage. Rather than simply holding a mirror up to society, is it leading the way forward?
