Nacho Libre
Funny man Jack Black as a Mexican wrestler? Yes, he is actually skilled enough to pull it off in the off-beat comedy, Nacho Libre. Black was perfect for the part as he brings a comical twist to every part he plays. Black plays a cook working in a catholic orphanage, which is exactly where you would expect to find him, right? His love for wrestling gives Black the unexpected idea of winning some cash in a wresting match to make the orphaned children happier.
A great message and surprisingly safe for kids, Nacho Libre would be great for family night. My dad is an older Chinese man where English is not his first language, but he understood Nacho Libre and laughed through the whole movie. Nacho Libre is easy enough to follow and the film’s comedy should appeal to both adults and kids alike.
The film also had some great supporting actors which shouldn’t be forgotten. Hector Jimenez plays Esqueleto who is Nacho’s sidekick. Jimenez honestly brings more comedy one-liners than Black. Then there is Ana de la Reguera who plays Sister Encarnacion. The love interest and beauty of the film, de la Reguera looks nearly identical to Penelope Cruz.
I really enjoyed this film for one simple fact-it was different. The setting, storyline, and ethnicity factors are all original and give Nacho Libre a unique spin. Films that carry some of those traits, such as a unique storyline or follow ethnic groups often overlooked by Hollywood, are often derogatory, stereo typical, sometimes to serious or not geared towards kids. Nacho Libre works as the fun family film because it was just fun as the characters relate to the child in all of us.
Overall I can honestly say that everyone can enjoy Nacho Libre. If my dad enjoyed it so can you. The extra DVD features are also quite great. There are deleted scenes, a make you own Luchador Mask, Nacho Libre Comic Book Creator, and a funny Jack sings page. The interactive sections are a great way for the kids to do some projects and express their artistic and creative sides. I even used some of these features-comic book creator could possibly be a cool career choice. Watch the movie, laugh, laugh, and laugh more then enjoy the features. Your time will be well spent.
