Idiocracy

Here is a film that many movie fans may of not actually heard of yet, but the title alone is what caught my attention. I’m talking about Idiocracy starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph from SNL, and Dax Shepard.

So what is Idiocracy all about you ask? The pentagon designed a program called “Human Hibernation Project”. This is used to preserve the best men in the military until they are needed the most. To test the project they enlist Joe played by Wilson and Rita played by Maya Rudolph. Due to the fact that the head of the Human Hibernation Project is arrested, and he is the only officer overseeing the project Joe and Rita are forgotten. 500 years later their hibernation chambers open and they are exposed to a completely different world.

The world that Joe and Rita now find themselves in is some sort of half-barbaric half-futuristic world. It’s actually hard to describe this world as the movie was a bit hard to follow at times. The president in the film was a former wrestler, the people use a Gatorade type drink instead of water, and everyone has low IQ’s. It’s a strange movie.

I didn’t really follow Idiocracy as the plot skips about a little too much. Wilson played the same type of character he plays in all his movies. You know the type, somewhat sarcastic, somewhat a loner, and somewhat funny in a weird way. I don’t know if it’s the tone of his voice that makes it seem like he plays the exact same character in every film but once again Wilson seems to be playing his usual character in Idiocracy. I haven’t seen Dax Shepard in a lot of projects but I don’t really care to either, as he overacts from beginning to end. It’s rather annoying to see Shepard on screen, however Maya Rudolph does a good job as Rita. Her character was a former prostitute with an attitude and her scenes command the most attention.

Do I recommend this film? Not really. The film seemed to portray the human race as to oblivious to what was happening around it, thus I found the premise unlikely to say the least. When compared to another Mike Judge film, Office Space, Idiocracy just doesn’t live up. I loved Office Space. Office Space’s space story unfolds without being so heavy handed with the humor. Idiocracy would be have to be considered corny. I’ve never watched a movie where the title says it all. Just promise me that you will completely skip this one and try your luck on something else.
