Children of Men
Children of Men is about a chaotic world on its way to extinction and guess what? Its our world. With fertility being non-existent by the year 2027, the youngest person in the world being 18 has just died. With this tragedy a group of activists have come across a pregnant woman who could possibly be the miracle the world has needed.
Children of Men turned out to be an eye-opening movie for me, and in more ways then one. The film is, first and foremost completely original. Which is definitely a breath of fresh air. The world of Children of Men, reminded me in some ways of the Holocaust, as the film centers on a society where all immigrants had to be detained and thrown in cages. Also, of key interest in the film is that we learn how exactly that the populous became infertile. Thus, Children of Men is certainly an original screenplay.
The film should prompt most audience members to realize how important children truly are to our civilization. While, we have all heard it many times before, it is nonetheless completely true that "children are our future". The world would obviously be extinct without procreation. But the feeling I got when I watched Children of Men was that our children need to be completely loved and cherished and this must be one of the core messages of the film. It’s just so horrible when you hear in the news about child neglect and abuse. Maybe the point of this film was to make us realize that if we don’t take the responsibility to cherish our children, their safety and the environment that nourishes them, these events could happen.
Clive Owen who played Theo Faron was believable. His role as the activist and protector of the pregnant mother was admirable. Faron a "follow the leader" type who became an activist and proceeded in trying to make a change. Micheal Caine who played Jasper Palmer was also a great addition. He added a sense of humor that played into the story very well. Children of Men is ultimately a cautionary tale concerning not to take what we have for granted. This film displayed a perfect account of how important "little things" can really be. If you want a thought provoking work of science-fiction, Children of Men will certainly open up anyone’s eyes.
